Solofire contains 6 DVDs (over 8 hours of training), a jam track CD, a guitar tab book (downloadable PDF file) and a program tracker. It’s not for acoustic player because the majority of the training is for electric guitar. It’s only for intermediate player who has already known the guitar basics and some chops. If you know pentatonic scales and have a solid sense of rhythm, this course is perfect for you. The course will definitely help you to break through rut, get more ideas on soloing and improvise solos from scratch. By the end of the training, you can virtually play any solo you want by your favourite guitarists.

Steve Stine is a professional guitar player as well as instructor. He has taught thousands of guitarists over the last 20 years or so. He holds a bachelor’s degree in music education from Morehead State University. He’s currently “Professor of Modern Guitar Studies” at North Dakota State University. He toured the U.S. and England, playing lead guitar in dozens of bands. He has also been a studio guitarist for radio, TV and various recording projects.

Here is the content breakdown of the Solofire DVDs:

  • DVD 1

You’ll learn fundamentals of creating solos, improvisation techniques, how to visualize the fretboard, palm muting, deaden strings, lead guitar mathematics, alternate picking etc.

  • DVD 2

Basically, you’ll learn the A minor pentatonic minor scale in all five positions and how to move licks across the entire fretboard. Steve will also show you music theory and the MML process (melody, motion and licks).

  • DVD 3

This DVD focuses on melodic technique such as different types of bends, vibrato, glide, hammer-on, pull-off, trills, double-stops and many more. Steve will also touch on how to alter the sound of lick by changing your attack, how to eliminate unwanted noise and feedback and how to stop sore fingers and dead notes.

  • DVD 4

You’ll learn how the masters of rock guitar like Randy Rhoads, Eddie Van Halen, Slash and Angus Young pieced together some of the most incredible solos ever written using tapping tricks. Besides, tap and slide, string-skipping and one-string soloing are also included in this DVD.

  • DVD 5

Steve will talk about two-string movement, how to combine different scales, interval-jumping, advanced palm-muting, how to analyse and jam along with a jam track, how to follow the chords and so on and so forth.

  • DVD 6

You’ll see how all the pieces come together by combining all the training to help you form complete, musical solos from scratch. You’ll also get to jam along with Steve over classics and hard rock songs. At the end, you’ll be taught how to develop your own signature licks, riffs and solos.

Now let’s talk about the video quality. It’s of high-definition (HD) quality and the audio is great as well. There is a split-screen view of close-up on the strumming hand on the top left corner of the video. There is also a frequent close-up on the fretting hand when the lesson focus is on the fretting hand techniques. Steve has a friendly and concise teaching style combined with clear and loud enough voice.

Steve also runs 3 generous bonuses:

  • Solofire Jam Track CD

You will get full-band backing tracks and a complete song transcriptions. All the tracks were recorded with live instruments in a professional studio so there is no computer-generated lousy sounds.

  • Solofire Guitar Tab Book (downloadable pdf)

It’s the course book which contains all the easy-to-follow tasks. You can opt to order the printed copy of the tab book but it’s going to cost you USD 9.98.

  • Progress Tracker

It will help you chart your daily progress. You can write down the date that you learn each new skill so that you’ll know exactly what you should be working on every time you pick up your guitar. It will help you stay on track with a flexible and structured practice routine. It’ll also give you encouragement when you see how much you’re learning.

Phone and email support are available. Unfortunately, there is no forum, chat room or live lessons.

Solofire is priced at USD 89.90.  You’ll have the option to select the payment plan which allows you to split your payment. It’s worth every penny you spend considering private lesson will cost you way even more than this price.

Money Back Guarantee5-stars

Unlike any other DVD course out there, Solofire has a very unique 90-day money back guarantee. If you aren’t satisfied with the course, you can request full refund of the purchase price by returning the course to Steve (shipping and handling charges are non-refundable). Now this is the unique part: beside the full refund, you’ll get additional USD 10 towards your next purchase. How cool is that?

Overall Editor’s Rating4-stars

You would spend probably a few thousand dollars for private guitar lessons in a year. Yet, you don’t even get to keep any DVDs or videos for what you learn. For the price of less than one hundred dollars, Solofire is definitely worth a try. There is no doubt that this is the best course for intermediate players who want to develop skills to play virtually any solo, improvise leads on demand and thus master the art of guitar soloing.
