Steve Krenz is a trained musician with a degree in music as well as a wealth of professional playing experience. He has played professionally with a broad range of bands from a symphony orchestra, to jazz bands, to Grammy winning artists like Donna Summer, The Fifth Dimension, Israel Houghton, and Tommy Sims. Steve is an active guitarist playing and recording professionally in Music City USA, Nashville, Tennessee. As a published author of several articles on various aspects of excellence in musicianship, he is also a sought after speaker and teacher conducting guitar-playing and music workshops across the United States and abroad. Besides, Steve Krenz’s professional teaching style is concise, thorough and easy to understand.
Let’s cut to the chase. 8 out of those 9 DVDs comprises 8 step-by-step fingerstyle sessions. Each session is complemented by both beginning and advanced workshops. In all, they are clocking in at almost 12 hours. Steve will demonstrate you all the fingerstyle skills, techniques and concepts in the sessions. At the end of each session, he will recommend an extra resource or tool you need such as metronome, footstool, nylon strings or “The Real Book”. The aforementioned sessions are as follows.
- Session 1 Basic Movements
- Session 2 Training Your Hands
- Session 3 3rds, 6ths & 10ths, Oh My!
- Session 4 Fingerstyle Arranging
- Session 5 Classical Guitar
- Session 6 Fingerstyle Techniques
- Session 7 Fingerstyle Jazz
- Session 8 Advanced Fingerstyle
Beside jazz and classical guitar style, you will also learn Merle Travis style, pop fingerstyle and Christmas songs. It’s advisable that you go through all the exercises in the beginning workshop and the advanced workshop after completing each session. Though soft-spoken, Steve is absolutely one of the best guitar instructors I have ever seen. He is clear and detailed in his explanations and provides concise views so that you can truly master fingerstyle guitar.
The DVD menu is laid out intuitively and navigable. There is no doubt that the video quality is of high definition (HD) standard. There were at least 2 cameras filming from different angles. I found no split-screen view on each hand but there was close-up at perfect angle. You will find on-screen musical notes and tabs at the bottom while scale and chord shape on the right hand side of the video. I don’t like the fact that the most part of the video is showing musical notes instead of tabs. Having said that, you can always refer to the lesson book for the tabs.
The 137-page digital lesson book (PDF file) mainly contains musical notes and tabs for each and every song you learn in the sessions. Some of the songs are Malaguena, Estudio, Ode to Joy, Teri’s Song, Springtime and much more. Each song has its chord shapes and recommended tempo stated on the lesson book.
33 play-along tracks are recorded in the same CD as the digital lesson book. All of them are just fingerstyle guitar tracks which you can play along with. Nothing much I can talk about these tracks, except that they are professionally recorded.
The final DVD is an exclusive bonus feature which you can enjoy the interviews with 3 fingerstyle masters i.e. Phil Keaggy, Thom Bresh and Pierre Bensusan. They serve as guest instructors showing how to play some of their songs, sharing personal insights plus experiences and giving some fingerstyle instructions.
Well, it’s a pretty great course but if I really want to nitpick, then I can say that there is no cool tool included such as online metronome, online tuner, guitar-related software or games. If you compare it with other guitar learning membership sites like Guitar Tricks and Jamplay, you will see a huge difference.
After you purchase the course, you can post whatever questions you have regarding fingerstyle guitar on their student support forum. You can even post your clips of your own playing for feedback and discuss your progress. By the way, the forum has a huge community of over 30,000 students as of this writing. Steve will personally answer your questions but other students will provide their two cents as well. The other cool thing is that Steve will broadcast live guitar lessons weekly or biweekly.
Where can you find a comprehensive fingerstyle guitar course which priced at only USD 119.99 ? You can only find it online. Your local guitar teacher will never ever charge you at such a low price. Moroever, owning Learn And Master Fingerstyle Guitar is like having a private guitar teacher by your side at all times.
Learn And Master Fingerstyle Guitar boasts a 60-day money back guarantee with no questions asked. However, like many other DVD courses you can find online, you’ll need to return the course within 60 days in order to get your refund of the purchase price (excluding shipping and handling charges). Let’s not forget about the shipping charges which will be incurred for the return.
Beside learning fingerstyle skills and techniques, you will be able to learn how to arrange fingerstyle songs yourself. It’s not likely to bring nearly as much value to a seasoned pro as to an intermediate player. However, once the advanced players have mastered fingerstyle guitar by using this course, they will add a new playing style to their repertoire.
